Privacy

The abundant opportunities available through new media comes with a cost -- a loss in privacy and confidentiality. Companies like Facebook and Google collect our information when we sign up to use their platforms and sell them to advertisers who want to know every detailed aspect of our life whether it be our hobbies to our favorite foods. The digital age has made it easy for us to give up privacy. It is common for people to ignore the terms and conditions when they sign up for things because of the length of all the conditions and how confusing it can be. Rather, they accept the terms and conditions and move on, not knowing they are allowing companies to take their information. An example of a loss in privacy and confidentiality is when Target had a massive credit card breach where names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and debit and credit card data of people who shopped at the retailer were taken.
