Blog: Social Networking Sites

1. Facebook is a lot more casual because it is personal and usually involves family and friends on your timeline. You can find pictures and funny posts that you can share for your friends to see. You can also tag, comment, share and react to pictures and videos that people post which allows you to interact with anyone.

2. Twitter allows you to read updates or the news with a 280 character count. Users have to get their point across quickly because they are limited. It is common for people to use Twitter on their phone because most people tweet while on-the-go. Users can reply or retweet another user's post. Twitter allows you to post pictures and videos just like you can on Facebook. The homepage has the most recent tweets of the day before you refresh it.

3. LinkedIn is more formal because you are connected with people who work with you or anyone you network with in a business setting. There are job postings and posts about how a company is doing. LinkedIn is also used for job searching or networking with potential employers. It is professional and is not used for random posts like you would have on Facebook. Users can like and comment on posts just like Facebook and Twitter.

4. Reddit is like a mix of multiple social networking sites. Users can post videos and pictures and ask questions and there are tons of topics users can talk about. It isn't formal like LinkedIn, but also isn't used like Facebook. Users can be personal if they want, but most users also choose to remain anonymous because posts can have sensitive topics. Reddit has a main page with all of the most popular posts from the subreddits you subscribe to which a great way to see what is interesting.

  1. Something that's interesting to note is that with some of the sites we usually use for personal use such as Facebook and Twitter, individuals and companies are starting to branch out with these social networking websites for more professional use. In a way these social sites can be used to brand yourself to companies - it's known that employers tend to look you up on Google and maybe even Facebook as a sort of background check. The use of hashtags (on Twitter) or joining groups can be used for professional networking or even for job search.
